Make your own yarn swift! December 18, 2013 7:30pm – 10pm

(Posted by Inez)

Having recently discovered how useful yarn swifts are and how expensive they can be, I did some research to come up with an inexpensive, portable design that almost anyone can make or customize themselves.

Now I will help you make a yarn swift for yourself, or for a friend so that you no longer have to be their “human yarn swift”.

The workshop costs $35 and it will take place on Wednesday December 18, 2013 from 7:30pm to 10pm.

This workshop will show you how to build your own portable yarn swift. The $35 workshop fee includes the materials to make the swift, instructions, and a $5 donation to VHS for the use of tools and the space. Class size is limited to 20 participants.

Pre-payment is required so that the correct amount of materials can be purchased and prepared before the workshop. Payment closes at 11pm on Saturday, November 30, 2013.

You can bring the paper ticket with you if you wish, but it is not necessary; just confirm your name at the event to get your materials.

The materials for the yarn swift will be provided, but you may want to bring the following items if you wish to personalize your yarn swift:
– Patterned Duct/Duck Tape – to cover the wood base pieces
– 1/2 metre of fabric – to make your own drawstring carrying bag for the yarn swift. There are sewing machines at the Hackspace that you can use to sew up the bag.  String will be provided for the drawstring closure. You can use quilting cotton, but a medium weight cotton would probably be a better choice.
– scrap piece of cardboard approximately 5-inches wide by 7-inches long. This will be used to cover the top of the swift and prevent the bolts from damaging the carrying bag.

  1. I just found out about this workshop and would love to attend. I’m so sorry to have missed the deadline; would it be possible to either be added to a waitlist for another edition of the workshop or an exception made for this one?
    Thanks,
    Sara

  2. Hi Sara,

There are some spaces still available, so I’ve extended the registration to Saturday, Dec. 7.

    Cheers,
