This curriculum is designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge required for the safe and effective use of our 3-axis wood CNC 'Dustie'. Afterwards, you will have an in-person training session, and upon successful completion the trainer may grant you independent access.

Through a series of modules, you'll learn everything from basic machine operation and safety protocols to executing simple projects independently. The course is structured to serve as both a guide and a reference after training, with further resources and information on more advanced topics.

Module 1: Introduction to CNC Machining Objective: Understand the basics of CNC machining, including what a CNC machine is, its components, and its capabilities. Content: Overview of CNC machining. Introduction to the specific home-built 3-axis CNC machine at the hackspace. Explanation of the water-cooled spindle and its advantages. Overview of Mach3 software as the machine controller.

Module 2: Safety First Objective: Learn to operate the CNC machine safely to protect the user, the machine, and nearby individuals. Content: Personal safety gear and precautions. Emergency stop and safety features of the machine. Safe startup and shutdown procedures. Recognising hazardous situations and how to avoid them.

Module 3: Basic Machine Operation Objective: Gain the necessary skills to operate the machine for simple projects. Content: Powering up and initializing the machine with Mach3. Loading and securing materials for machining. Setting the origin point (zeroing the machine). Basic Mach3 controls and interface overview. Performing simple operations: facing, pocketing, and contouring.

Module 4: Tooling, Work Holding, and Machining Strategies Objective: Understand the basics of selecting appropriate tooling, securing the workpiece, and choosing machining strategies. Content: Types of tools used with the CNC machine and their applications. Work holding methods: clamps, vices, and vacuum tables. Basic machining strategies for efficiency and quality. Overview of feeds, speeds, and tool paths for different materials.

Module 5: Creating Your First Project Objective: Apply the skills learned to create a small, simple project. Content: Designing a simple project that incorporates facing, pocketing, and contouring operations. Basic CAD/CAM concepts relevant to the project. Step-by-step guide through the machining process of the project. Troubleshooting common issues during the project.

Module 6: Further Learning and Resources Objective: Know where to find more information and how to continue learning about CNC machining. Content: Recommended online forums, websites, and communities. Books and manuals for deeper understanding. Advanced courses and tutorials for complex projects and techniques.
